GM Restoration Parts: Success Through Licensing

The establishment of the General Motors Restoration Parts Program was intended to transfer the responsibility for management and production of restoration parts from General Motors over to a select group of highly qualified manufacturers. Two key advantages for General Motors were significantly reduced inventory costs and incremental revenue from the program’s licensees.

The development and implementation of a “benefit‐oriented” strategy was foundational to this achievement. Licensees were able to secure design data that greatly improved manufacturing quality and efficiency. In addition, licensees were also able to use the official “GM Restoration Parts” emblem, which serves as a readily identifiable symbol of quality and authenticity for restoration enthusiasts. Along the same lines, consumers benefited from the ability to purchase high quality, accurate parts for their restoration work as well as the increased availability of parts from licensed manufacturers.
